Welcome to Supporting Differentiated Instruction

Supporting quality instruction

Supporting Differentiated Instruction is an online resource offering an overview and resources to assist districts in implementing and supporting rigorous, quality standards-based instruction for all students.

How do we adapt instruction to meet the changing needs of every student? Differentiated instruction serves as the vehicle for ensuring each learner is challenged at an appropriate level in a respectful learning environment. Every child gets core level instruction in the adopted instructional program and teachers provide additional instruction for identified student groups. Student needs and grouping are determined through multiple measures of evaluation. Differentiated instruction exhibits high quality instructional techniques, student engagement, and high expectations appropriate for each learner. Different schools use different models for implementation and providing additional supports during lessons.

Ensuring access for all students

The California Department of Education requires districts to ensure differentiated curriculum and instructional strategies are in place and responsive to the needs of all students. Differentiated curriculum provides for the balanced development of critical, creative, problem solving and research skills, core content, and authentic and appropriate products. Effective differentiated instruction facilitates ensuring all students meet or exceed state core curriculum and standards.

This website is designed as a resource for district and school leaders to share basic information on differentiated instruction, guide conversations to improve student learning, and review sample lessons for implementation.
