WHAT

Fitness Strategies for Vacation Time

BIG IDEA

It is important to maintain personal fitness continually, even during your time away from school.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

How can I work out when I am on vacation, if traveling or at home without fitness equipment?

CONTENT STANDARD

Physical Education Grade 8

3.0 Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
3.6 Participate safely in moderate to vigorous physical activity when conditions are atypical (weather, travel, injury).
4.0 Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.
4.2 Identify appropriate physical activities that can be performed if one’s physical fitness program is disrupted by inclement weather, travel from home or school, or a minor injury.

SKILLS and STRATEGIES

Distinguish activities that represent fitness concepts of specificity, overload, progression, and FITT (frequency, intensity, time, and type).
Identify fitness activities that can be performed with little or no equipment and how to perform them properly.

ASSESSMENT

A homework fitness log completed by the student describing the fitness activity performed and the length of time performed daily and weekly.

The lesson

Background
Fitness activities that may be performed at home differ from activities that can be performed while on a car trip or another type of vacation. Students explore types of fitness activities that can be performed with little or no supplies/equipment. They list the activities they know and/or expand their lists by interviewing adults and students about their fitness activities or by watching fitness videos that use little or no equipment. The student activity lists need to distinguish between types of activities so these are included: flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.

Review the principles of fitness including progression, overload, specificity, and the FITT principle.

Product

Fitness activities while away from school. The student activity lists need to distinguish between types of activities so these are included: flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Students explore types of fitness activities that can be performed with little or no supplies/equipment. They list the activities they know and/or expand their lists by interviewing adults and students about their fitness activities or by watching fitness videos that use little or no equipment. Students demonstrate the type of fitness exercises they performed by submitting photos, video or digital clips, and illustrations or a written format such as a list or a detailed description.

Supplies available at home or on a vacation differ, as do destinations and modes of travel. Various scenarios need to be considered so students can demonstrate fitness activities in any situation, since fitness needs to be incorporated on a daily basis in any situation.

Students unable to run or jog may walk or swim for endurance exercise.

Students in an area that is not safe to exercise outdoors may perform indoor exercises such as leg lifts, squats, pushups, sit-ups, wall sits, etc., as well as flexibility exercises.

Students demonstrate the frequency of their fitness exercises by turning in a fitness activity log or journal of each day’s activities.  At the end of their log or journal a total of the time spent exercising and the average time of exercise per day should be recorded.
